Located in the wine village of kinheim-kindel of the middle-mosel, the trossen family estate is run by rudolf and rita trossen. They are one of the founding members of eco-vin and pioneers of biodynamic viticulture in the moselle. They have farmed this way for 42 years, which shows through in the vitality of the soil and the diverse ecosystem, which thrive in this nourished environment. Within their 18 fields, predominantly planted with riesling and most of which are on steep slate slopes that the moselle is famous for, every vine must be tended by hand. In fact, there is very little machinery or technology used in any part of the process from the vineyard to the cellar. In 2010 the trossen’s started to explore the possibility of wine made without intervention, nothing added and nothing taken away. Encouragement for this came from sommeliers and the industry at large as public demand is continually growing for more transparency in the products they choose to buy and consume. Without the use of sulfur, riesling develops very differently in its organoleptic profile and can show immense depth of subtlety. These wines make up a second label for the trossen’s called “purus”, which are spontaneously fermented with no sulfur added. Total production of the trossen wines is below 20,000 bottles annually, which translates to less than 1300 bottles of each wine that they produce every vintage. They have never had the intention to grow their production further, as at this volume every vine meets the winemaker several times a year. Either rudolf or rita are the ones to take care of these vines in which they share a profound connection and it is this depth of understanding between man and plant that shines through every bottle of trossen wine.

As with all our producers, we will be donating part of the proceeds from sales to a non-profit close to our heart. For trossen wines, we have chosen to donate to the canadian mental health association. Please check them out.

The Madonna is from the heart of Hubertuslay, steep and facing south. This is possibly one of the most expressive natural wines. This year the fermentation remained, after 1 year in the old Fuderfass, at 6.9 g/l.

Vinification Method: Grapes are hand-harvested and whole bunches are fermented in 350-litre stainless steel tanks with indigenous yeast. The tanks are cooled by ambient air and fermentation takes place over about 8 months. The wine ages for about 11 months and is bottled without fining or filtration and zero sulfur is added

The 2018 Madonna is golden and dense, has a complex nose with ripe notes reminiscent of sherry, plenty of fullness and yet enough flu to stay in suspension. Natural balance in the golden section. Can be enjoyed without food. Big glasses, please, Madonna wants to breathe!

Coming from low-yielding, high-quality vines, that stand in a fertile soil: sandy loam, which was already cultivated by the Romans. The ruins of a Roman villa are very close by.

It has a pleasant aroma and taste of dark fruits ( blackberries and black cherries).

Trosecco 2019

Riesling/ Rivaner

10.5% ABV

RS: 11,3 g/l Acidity:7,0 Sulphur: 38mg/l total:106 mg/l

Age of Vines: Around 100 years old

Soil: Red slate

The grapes come from the Rosenberg and Kröver Paradies in Kinheim, both of which are open to the wind and have light southern slopes. Slate, gravel and sandy loam form the geological basis of this Cuvee.

Vinification Method: Grapes are hand-harvested and whole bunches are fermented in 2000-litre stainless steel tanks with indigenous yeast and a light addition of sulfur. Secondary fermentation is carried out in bottle with an addition of yeast. The bottles are disgorged and the wine is lightly sulfured. The wine contains a small amount of residual sugar.

Notes of apples and citrus, paired with supporting acidity make this both refreshing and exceptionally easy to drink.“Cheerfulness” is probably the best description for this wine.

PURELLUS PUR’US PET NAT 2019

100% Riesling

12% ABV

RS: 5.4 g/L Acid: 6.4 Sulp. free: 0 mg/l total: 9 mg/l

Age of Vines: 40 years old

Soil: Grey slate

The grapes for this wine come from the Langfuhr vineyard on the Roman slope. It is a 40 year old Riesling vineyard with very soft blue slate. A lot of herbs and wild flowers grow there, many animals scurry around, hares, wild boars and deer visit us, no car traffic disturbs the idyll, and the proximity to the flowing river gives this place something magical. This magic also lives in this wine, which was bottled in December 2018 while it was still slowly fermenting. This PetNat is not disgorged, still has the full yeast, and it takes a steady hand, and preferably an apron, to open this bottle. This Riesling exudes a nutty effervescence and excites all senses with its fine perlage. Has only one fault: the bottle is quickly empty when guests come

SCHIEFERBLUME_RIESLING_TROCKEN_2019_GARNEAU_BLOCK.jpeg

SCHIEFERBLUME RIESLING TROCKEN 2019

100% Riesling

11.5% ABV

RS: 6.6 g/L Acid: 6.1 Sulp. free: 20 mg/l total: 44 mg/l

Age of Vines: 37-60 years old

Soil: Grey and blue slate

Schieferblume means “Flower of the Slate” and is a blend from 4 different Riesling vineyards.

This is the “gold” of the Moselle, because on these stony slopes the water does not stand still, and the Riesling does not like wet, cold “feet”. But what benefits later is the quality of the wine, as the vine has to extend its roots deep into the earth and rock crevices. It is from this effort of the vine to suck its water from great depths that the saltiness, minerality and thus elegance of Moselle wines result.

Vinification Method: Grapes are hand-harvested and whole bunches are fermented in 1000-litre stainless steel tanks with indigenous yeast. The tanks are cooled by ambient air and fermentation takes place over 4-6 months. The wine is bottled after a light filtration and minimal addition of sulfur.

KIENHEIMER ROSENBERG 2018

100% Riesling

10 % ABV

RS: 23.6 g/L Acid: 6.5 Sulp. free: 40 mg/l total: 101 mg/l

Age of Vines: 40+ years

Soil: Grey slate, sandy loam and gravel

The “Rosenberg” site includes various vineyards, partly covered with grey slate, partly with sandy loam and gravel, mostly to the south inclined and wind-open. Rather light wines with apple-like fruit aromas grow on it. The grapes grown there in 2018 were golden-ripe and in perfect health and seemed to be made for a light, yellow-fruity tasty wine.

Vinification Method: Grapes are hand-harvested and whole bunches are fermented in stainless steel tanks with indigenous yeast. The tanks are cooled by ambient air and fermentation takes place over10 weeks or longer as needed. The wine is bottled after a light filtration and minimal addition of sulfur.
