Inspired by the delicious, quaffable wines drank while playing pétanque with friends on sunny afternoons in France, we are excited to introduce Cochonnet! Sourced from ethical growers that our friends at MFW have worked with for years, Cochonnet is made with all organic or biodynamic grapes, fermented with native yeasts, and bottled in a 1L with a screw cap for a great price so you can drink it all day long. The story goes like this - the world-famous Joe Beddia (Pizza prince. Hoagie hero. Tomato Pie’d Piper. Natural wine impresario and now wine label designer), and his talented artist sister, Maria Beddia, did the colourful label art for the new Cochonnet wines. But this new trio of delicious and affordable litre-bottle wines imported from France (there are different producers for each varietal)— a white, red, and rosé made from organic or biodynamic grapes — is very much a Philly collaboration. Our friends and Philly based importer M.F.W. Wine Co. sourced the wines from growers they had long relationships with, who produce organic or biodynamic grapes. And Chloe Grigri of Good King Tavern came up with the name, which has a double meaning — little piggy, and also the tiny ball used as the target in pétanque, the French bowling game that’s a cousin to bocce.

As with all our producers, we will be donating part of the proceeds from sales to a non-profit close to our heart. For Cochonnet we have chosen to donate to Second Chance Animal Rescue Society (SCARS). Please check them out.

GAMAY SAINT-ROMAIN

13% ABV

100% Gamay saint romain

Notes from MFW:

Cochonnet Gamay is made by Romain Paire of Domaine des Pothiers, a reference point producer in the Côte Roannaise. Although technically a part of the Loire, with it’s unique granite soils this area is often considered the unofficial “11th Cru of the Beaujolais” (even though it’s at least an hour drive from Brouilly, and the Gamay used here is a particular variety called Gamay Saint-Romain, which is distinct from the Gamay in the Beaujolais). The Paires have been farming here for over 300 years, raising Limousin cattle in addition to grapes, and are now certified organic and biodynamic.

Cochonnet Gamay is sourced from younger vine Gamay on granitic sand soils. The grapes are all harvested by hand, only indigenous yeasts are used, and the wine undergoes a classic, partial whole-cluster fermentation with élevage in cement for 8 months, yielding a bright, peppery rendition of Gamay perfect with a chill. The wine is very aromatic, displaying lively notes of red fruits, white pepper, with a juicy mouthfeel with plenty of zest and energy

Melon

12% ABV

100% melon de Bourgogne

Notes from MFW:

Cochonnet Melon is made by Stéphane Orieux of Domaine de la Bregeonnette. His grandfather, Joseph Orieux, founded this domaine in the town of Vallet in the 1960's and has been organic from the start, recently becoming certified (only 12 producers out of 600+ actually have the certification). Today, Stéphane upholds his family's traditions of organic farming, hand-harvesting, wild yeast fermentations, and long, sur-lie aging. Due to the many decades of experience, Bregeonnette has become a reference point for other winemakers in the region who want to learn how to work organically in the vines.
Even Marc Ollivier of Domaine de la Pépière consults Stéphane when he has questions about organic treatments. The same care and dedication to quality is present throughout the entire range of wines.

We super enjoyed the flavour notes of green apple, pear, lemon, lime and delicious salinity.
